U.S. Bishops disown favorable review of "Golden Compass"

As I predicted...

Via The Cafeteria is Closed, I just learned the U.S. bishops have withdrawn the review its office for films had previously published giving a thumbs up to The Golden Compass. As I explained a few days ago, this film is based on the work of an author who aims to create an atheistic counterpart to C.S. Lewis's series for children, the Chronicles of Narnia.

The Catholic News Service dryly notes: "no reason was given." I think we all know the reason.

There were several blogs that had discussed the USCCB's review last week and we tried to view it at their website without any success. I wonder if they removed it early last week? The damage has already been done tho, and as Peter Vere has said, just removing it ain't enough; they need to follow up as to WHY they removed it. And let us pray that it isn't just because a lot of people were complaining. I hope to see something to the effect of...we were wrong. What are the chances of that?

Finally! But I'm so disappointed that there was any approval to begin with.

...An employee who shames our bishops with reviews of this sort should be fired.

He has a good point. Let's hope Cardinal George is ready to make some changes.
